Kenyan professor joins ranks of great scientists

Monopolies watchdog rebuffs BP buyout plan

The Government has rejected the take over of British Petroleum (BP) Africa Limited by the Shell petroleum citing infringement of monopolies rules.

On Thursday, Shell Petroleum announced it acquired assets of BP Kenya in a deal that involved the purchase of 65 service stations. The buyout deal was finalised by BP and Shell parent companies in United Kingdom. However, it was subject to approval by the Kenyan regulator — the Monopolies and Price Control department at Treasury. The Government based its ruling on the restrictive trade practices, monopolies and price control Act.

Fisherman catches fish with religious inscription

A fisherman in South Coast’s Vanga area early yesterday morning caught a unique fish with patterns on one side that resembled Islamic calligraphic inscriptions.

The two-kilo tuna species was discovered at a Mombasa Old Town fish outlet ‘Takaungu Fish Shop’ after the shop owner bought it at Vanga and transported it to Mombasa for sale.

Nobel laureate slams Kenyan MPs

Kenyan Nobel peace laureate Wangari Maathai has criticised her fellow MPs for increasing their travel allowance.

Tribunal reverses Nema ruling on Mara project

A tribunal has reversed a decision to permit construction of tourism facilities next to the Leopard breeding grounds in the Masaai Mara game reserve.

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) had allowed constructions around the Leopard Gorge, which conservationists challenged saying the hotel activities would interfere with the breeding patterns of the animals.

Kenya has opted to initiate a parallel project to fast-track the implementation of the East African Sub-marine Cable project. Information and Communications Permanent Secretary Dr.Bitange Ndemo said on Tuesday that the decision follows delays in the implementation of the fibre optic project spearheaded by a Consortium of national telecommunications institutions within the region.

Report: Kenya has 54 political parties.

A status report on registered political parties has revealed a widespread proliferation of outfits, some even without physical addresses.

The report, prepared by the deputy registrar-general, F M Ng’ang’a, for the Electoral Commission of Kenya (ECK), indicates that there were 54 registered political parties as at December 31, 2005. Despite the high number and an expected 60 mark as more outfits emerge, only seven parties are represented in Parliament.

2007 World Cross Country Office Inaugurated.

The Mombasa offices for next year’s world cross country championships were opened at a colourful ceremony presided over by Minister for Sports Maina Kamanda. Speaking after the opening, the organizing committee’s spokesman David Okeyo said that the committee will move some of its operations to Mombasa. The International Association of Athletics Federations' flag was paraded in a convoy around the North Coast heading to the Championships secretariat in Nyali, Mombasa.

Kenya rally champ awaits action on Uganda saga

Kenya National Rally Champion Azar Anwar will have to wait for a course of action from the Kenya Motor Sport Foundation after the organizers of the Pearl Of Africa Uganda Rally rejected his appeal for unfair penalties given to him at the last weekends event.

An agitated Azar who finished 4th spoke to Capital FM Sport and claimed to have been robbed off the second place spot after he was penalized for arriving at a section 3 minutes 20 seconds late.
